One of the hidden treasures in the Singapore Botanic Gardens, this Sundial Garden is off the main path and not so easy to chance upon.

This serene, restful garden was laid out in 1929 by the Director of the Botanic Gardens Eric Holttum. His wife, Ursula Holttum, designed & sculptured the sundial with its enigmatic inscription: “What thou seekest is a shadow”.

A sundial is the earliest known time-keeping device, indicating time of day by the relative position of shadows of an object.

In the realm of art-making, I have long appreciated the importance of shadows and empty spaces. Often, these are just as important, or perhaps more important, than the subjects in focus.

In the growing unrest that is the world gone mad, I find solace in the shadows and the in-between spaces. The places where there might be sliver of light, a seed of hope. That is where you will find me until time heals.
