More than a month since my last post.
It has been difficult to write
anything at all.
Escaped into the solace of kneading, feasting, running, bingeing on Netflix, scribbling without an end in mind.
But it is time
to start with a piece of art which captured my mood and angst
and made me smile.
This bronze titled “Pose (Preman Kampung)” is exhibited in the Ilham Gallery, a public gallery which we visited when we popped into Kuala Lumpur over the New Year holidays. It is created by Yunizar, an Indonesian sculptor, completed in 2014,
I smile because this was apparently one of my favourite poses growing up, given I was a rather precocious & belligerent youngster. Having said this, I have been photographed in this pose even today. Preman Kampong can be translated as Village Thug, which makes one take a second look and ponder the initial whimsy which becomes a sobering consideration of the political-social issues which plague many parts of the region.
The interesting feature of this sculpture is the 2 faces found on either side of it. Here are a few images of the Other Side.
This is my rather belated contribution to The Changing Seasons hosted by Su at zimmerbitch.
Sometimes writing comes easily and other times, not at all. Never mind! Glad you posted.

Ju-Lyn, lovely to see you back! I’ve found that time out when writing is difficult is just the key! I like the sound of your break … baking is wonderfully soothing and creative! The Pose is a terrific statue and thank you for sharing here… maybe we should all strike such a pose from time to time! 😀

What a pose! 😄 I call it the Peter-Pan Pose to myself because it always reminds me of him. 😉 Glad to see you back after your break! ❤

You are spot on – it is the Peter Pan pose …. with all the attitude bundled right along in there! Love how you often bring a different perspective to the things around me!

Thank you for posting Ju-Lyn, and for sharing this very powerful piece of art.
Somebody (Hemingway perhaps?) compared writing to opening a vein, and I think there is truth in that. Sometimes we have to allow ourselves time and space to recover and regroup. I hope that all the other things you’ve undoubtedly done have brought joy and satisfaction.

Welcome back Ju-Lyn, it’s good to take a break sometimes and start writing again when the time feels right. It’s a fascinating sculpture that seems full of stories 💜 xxx

Funny to try to picture you as a precocious child being a village thug. 😉
I’d wondered if I’d missed some posts. Apparently you’ve just not been posting! Nice to have you back. 🙂

Thank you Betsy – good to be back in the fold! I miss reading and chatting with you all!
Yes yes, unfortunately, I was a rather thuggish child, according to my mom. But never mind, it takes all sorts, right?
