Allow me to introduce my kooky family (me in the back row, tucked in the middle, Mom & Dad in front, Little Bro on my right, Little Sis on my Left). It took a whole series of shots amidst hysterical giggling as Loving Husband frantically tried to get a decent shot in where everyone’s eyes were open.

It’s been a while since all 5 of us have been in one timezone to breathe the same air, share mindspace & sofaspace, and break bread together. And boy! did we do just that in abundance when we took at week to travel to Penang & Ipoh. Time with these folks is my highlight for June.
Apart from much laughter & bonding, we partook of delectable goodies. Here are a few:
Ikan bilis (Durbar, Ipoh): crispy anchovies fried with onions & chilli – perfect beer food
Peruvian Pizza (Michaelangelos, Ipoh)
Caramel Custard (Sin Hean Lee, Ipoh)
Eggplant fries with dried shrimp & chilli (Yum Yum, Ipoh)
Soya Bean Curd with Peanuts & Sesame (Big Mom Bean Curd, Ipoh): like an Asian panna cotta
Panna Cotta with pomelo & yuzu (Bareesta, Ipoh): an Asian twist
Best Eggs Ben ever (Bareesta, Ipoh)
Soft Boiled eggs on Toast (Sin Lean Lee Coffee Shop, Ipoh)
Ju Her Char (Ivy’s, Penang): stewed jicama with cuttlefish
Kaya Toast (Ah Wang Cafe, Penang): best ever! with charcoal grilled bread sandwiching butter & kaya
Nasi Lemak (Medan Selera Mutiara, Penang): coconut rice with sambal, anchovies & egg, wrapped in a banana leaf
Chendol (Medan Selera Mutiara, Penang): creamy red beans, silky smooth pandan noodles, resting on shaved ice & coconut milk & gula melaka (brown sugar on speed)
Pasembur (Shen Fu Cafe, Penang): looks a mess but so delicious!
Battered Shrimp paste Tofu (Viva Food Centre, Penang): tasty!
How great that you were able to reunite! What a beautiful family portrait! And those food shots – they all look like they taste amazing. Although I confess I don’t know what a lot of those items are but I’d order them on your say-so, Ju-Lyn!
Hey Deb! That’s the Ultimate Trust for anyone in my family – to eat on our recommendation. So, I thank you for this compliment 🙂 Thank you for getting excited along with me!
You and your family are absolutely adorable! … especially the shot where you are dissolving into laughter. Yes, those memories that involve uncontrolled laughing with loved ones are the best 💕
And all that food! Like Deb, I don’t recognize most of it but I’d be willing to try. In particular “brown sugar on speed” has my attention 😉
Laughter is quite underrated, me thinks. Thank you, Joanne.
Gula Melaka (special brown sugar from Malacca, Malaysia) and other regional variations is a smoky block of brown sugar more-ishness that is soooooo fabulous. We recently baked cookies with it and omitted all white sugar – that was something else!
You have a beautiful family Ju-Lyn, very blessed 🙂

Yes – but you’re tiny and run. You can afford to eat morning cookies 🙂

Sigh … I’m afraid the running doesn’t afford many cookies. As I say this, I am snarfing a chocolate chip pancake ….
