Earth laughs in flowers

Earth2
Arrangement discovered in September

Someone has been playful with the frangipani again! Several months ago, I found an arrangement on a lawn in Frangipani Grove. I stopped to admire this Person’s handiwork and enjoyed the work of their hands.

Today, as Loving Husband and I ran along the road past the Grove, we came across a huge pile of various frangipanis which Someone had lovingly gathered into a bouquet on the ground.

I spent this past weekend at the Singapore Writers Festival, which has given me much food for thought. One of these is climate change, something I have been thinking on for while. This brings to mind Emerson’s poem Hamatreya, which is a more sobering proposition than the joy & playfulness of the flowers encountered earlier today.
“Earth laughs in flowers, to see her boastful boys
Earth-proud, proud of the earth which is not theirs;
Who steer the plough, but cannot steer their feet
Clear of the grave.”
~~ exerpt from HamatreyaRalph Waldo Emerson ~~
  • This is a song I listened to a lot when I was growing up as I commiserated over Mother Earth’s plight. It is also one of Younger Daughter’s favourites.
  • This post is written in response to Debbie’s One Word Sunday: Earth.

  1. I have a simple folk art garden plaque I painted years ago saying- ” Earth Laughs in Flowers”, but I changed it to “Earth Smiles in Flowers” – both are equally beautiful. It sounds like you had a great time at the writers festival, and what a lovely welcome to come home to the arrangement of the flowers. So Sweet.
